About the phones...

Recent changes in the phone system here have helped create phone numbers that more closely resemble numbers in the U.S. However, there are still some important differences.

The area code from Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) to Los Barriles is 624 but if you are calling from within the same area code, you don't need it; simply dial the 7-digit number. The area code for Todos Santos to La Paz is 612.

Long Distance: If you are calling to a different area code from within Mexico, dial 01 before the number (example: 01-612-141-2345).

Cell phones: All calls from a cell phone require 10-digit dialing. Long distance or in the same area code, to another cell phone or to a landline, dial the area code + the seven digit number. To reach a cell phone from a landline in the same area code, you have to precede the 10 digits with the prefix 044.If the cellphone is in a different area code, preceed the 10-digit number with 045. For example from my house to my friend's cell phone would be 044-(624)-151-2345. To reach a cell phone in a different area code from a landline simply dial it as if it were a regular long distance call (01-(area code)-the seven digit number.).

Calling from the US: If you need to reach someone on a Mexican phone from the US here's how: First dial 011 (indicating you are making an international call) 52 (the country code for Mexico) then the 10 digit number (example: 011-52-624-141-2345). If you are calling a cell phone, insert a "1" after the country code and before the area code (example: 011-52-1-624-151-4887)

"800" number dialing from within Mexico: If you need to call a US toll free number while you are in Mexico, you'll need to make the following adjustments to the number you wish to call:

To dial a 1-800 number, dial 001-880-the 7-digit number.

To dial a 1-888 number, dial 001-881-the 7-digit number.

To dial a 1-877 number, dial 001-882-the 7-digit number.

To dial a 1-866 number, dial 001-883-the 7-digit number.

Some of those numbers will not be toll free from here, and will incur regular long distance rates, but at least you will be able to get through.

There should be a recording announcing if it is not toll free, which will ask if you want to continue.
